Introduction Of The Tattoo In Western Society

The tattoo was reintroduced into Western society by the British expedition led by Captain Cook on his return to Tahiti in 1771. Cook's sailors began the tradition of tattooing sailors, this hobby quickly spread among the other sailors, who learned the art and practiced it on board. In the U.S., tattoos became popular with commercial mariners and sailors of World War II. In 1950 designs of skulls appeared distinctive phrases including motorcycle gangs.

One of the first professional tattooists was CHFellows. It is considered that Martin Hildebrandt, a German immigrant, opened the first tattoo studio in 1870 in New York. His biggest competitor was Samuel O 'Reilly who invented the tattoo machine in 1891.

The scope of this practice went far beyond. They are increasingly used to create permanent make up effects when used as eyeliner, eyebrows and lips. It is also used to hide scars or in cases of reconstruction of the nipple as in cases of mastectomies.
